Wayne County was created in 1796 and
is named for General "Mad" Anthony Wayne. The county seat is Wooster. Cities, towns, and
villages (past and present) of Wayne County are Apple Creek Village, Baughman
Township, Burbank Village, Canaan Township, Chester Township, Chippewa Township,
Clinton Township, Congress Township, Congress Village, Creston Village, Dalton
Village, Doylestown Village, East Union Township, Franklin Township,
Fredericksburg Village, Funk, Green Township, Kidron, Marshallville Village,
Milton Township, Mount Eaton Village, Orrville, Paint Township, Plain Township,
Rittman, Salt Creek Township, Shreve Village, Smithville Village, Sterling,
Sugar Creek Township, Wayne Township, West Salem Village, Wooster, and Wooster
Township.
*Wayne County, Ohio, is situated north east of the
centre of the state, and contains 660 square miles. Organized in 1808. The surface is rolling,
and in some places level; soil, fertile, especially on the streams. Watered by Killbuck river
and Chippewa and Sugar creeks, and Lake fork of Mohiccan creek. Capital, Wooster. There were
in 1840, neat cattle 20,614, sheep 48,568, swine 55,899; wheat 753,621 bushels produced, rye
49,668, Indian corn 395.030, barley 2,104, oats 542,965, potatoes 132,003, sugar 177,092 pounds;
68 stores, capital $128,925; 4 fulling mills, 2 woolen factories, 27 tanneries, 7 distilleries,
3 breweries, 1 pottery, 23 flouring mills, 17 grist mills, 81 saw mills, 6 oil mills, 2 printing
offices, 2 weekly newspapers. Capital in manufactures $110,280. 1 academy 25 students, 10 schools
278 scholars. Population: 35,808.
